At the National Kennel Club, we want to help you take good care of your dog, and we know that different breeds have different care requirements. In this article, we will focus on beagles, and go over the essentials of how to care for these dogs.

How to Care for Your Beagle

•  Take Your Beagle for Regular Vet Checkups. A key part of caring for any dog is to take them for regular checkups at the veterinarian’s office, and this is especially important for beagles. These dogs are genetically predisposed to a variety of health conditions, including intervertebral disk disease, hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and hypothyroidism, as well as several eye diseases. By taking your beagle to the vet regularly, you should be able to identify signs of these conditions early on, and the vet may be able to treat them before they progress.

•  Feed Your Beagle a Healthy Diet. Another key part of caring for your beagle is to feed them a healthy diet. We recommend that you follow your local veterinarian’s guidance on the amount of food to feed your beagle as the amount varies due to the age and activity level of your dog.  We recommend you choose high-quality food that is made with whole ingredients. Don’t simply leave food out in a bowl for your dog to eat as they like, as this can lead them to become overweight.

•  Make Sure Your Beagle Gets Plenty of Exercise. Beagles require at least an hour of exercise per day to remain healthy and content, so we recommend taking your dog on several walks per day or letting them get their exercise in with training or with hunting rabbits.
