When bringing home a new dog or puppy, it’s natural to be excited—after all, you are welcoming a new member into your household. In our experience at the National Kennel Club, many new dog owners are so caught up in the excitement that they don’t think about things like getting their dog registered.

What Is the Purpose of a Dog Registry?

In this article, we will explain the purpose of our dog registry to help you decide if registration is something you want to pursue for your new canine companion.

  • Tracking Ancestry – One of the purposes of our dog registry is to keep track of dogs’ breed information and ancestry. This information is important for dog breeders, but it’s also useful for ordinary dog owners. Knowing the breed of your dog will help you find the most accurate guides for their care.
  • Dog Shows – You will also need to enter your dog into our dog registry in order to participate in dog shows. Even if you don’t have any current plans to enter your dog into such a competition, registering your dog gives you the freedom to pursue this avenue should you decide to do so later.
  • Dog Sports – Your dog will need to be recorded in our dog registry in order to participate in dog sports such as agility or lure courses. Dog shows aren’t just about seeing how well a dog conforms to its breed standards; they also include tests of the dogs’ skills. If you want to be able to participate in these types of competitions, then you will need to get your dog registered first.
