OFFICIAL NKC BREEED STANDARDS FOR THE TREEING WALKER COON HOUND
THE TREEING WALKER BREED STANDARDS WERE ADOPTED DECEMBER 1, 1969, A GROUP OF INTERESTED TREEING WALKER BREEDERS AND HUNTERS. THESE STANDARDS ARE REVISED TO BETTER STATE SFFORT TO USE THIS STANDARD TO MAKE A MORE UNIFORM HUNTING AND TREE DOG.
GENERAL APPEARANCE AND COAT POINTS 10
A STATELY LOOKING HOUND WITH A SMOOTH HAIRED GLOSSY COAT COMBIATIONS OF BLACK, WHITE, AND TAN WITH COAT THICK ENOUGH TO PROTECT FROM BRIARS AND BRUSH. THE TREEING WALKER SHOULD SHOW SIGNS OF INTELLIGENCE, STRENGTH AND ENDURANCE.
HEAD AND NECK (TEETH, MUZZLE, EYES AND EARS) POINTS 15
HEAD CARRIED WELL UP WITH NECK RISING GRACEFULLY FROM SHOULDERS APPEARING MEDIUM IN LENGTH, STRONG AND FREE FROM LOOSE SKIN. TEETH SHOULD HAVE A SMOOTH BITE WITH NEITHER OVERSHOT NOR UNDERSHOT BITE, MUZZLE SHOULD HAVE A SQUARE APPEARANCE WITH STOP NOT TO PROMINENT, NOSTRILS LARGE AND BLACK, WITH OTHER COLOR A FAULT.EYES WELL SET APART, MODERATELY PROMINATE SHOWING TO BE EXPRESSIVE AND ALERT, BROWN OR BLACK. EARS OF MEDIUM LENGTH AND SET MODERATELY LOW, SLIGHTLY ROUNDED WITH INSIDE OF EAR TIPPING TOWARD MUZZLE.
FRONT QUARTERS (CHEST, SHOULDERS, FRONT FEET AND LEGS) POINTS 15
CHEST SHOULD BE DEEP RATHER THAN WIDE WITH PLENTY OF LUNG SPACE; WIDE SPRUNG RIBS THAT EXTEND WELL BACK WITH SPACE IN FLANK TO ALLOW FOR SPRING AND SPEED. THE SHOULDERS AR SLOPING SHOWING CLEAN MUSCULAR AND ENDURANCE. FRONT FEET AND LEGS SHOULD SHOW STRAIGHT WELL-BONED FORELEGS WITH SOLID WELL-PADDED CATLIKE FEET. TOES WELL ARCHED WITH STRONG NAILS FOR SPEED AND ENDURANCE.
HIND QUARTERS (BACK, HIPS, BACK LEGS AND FEET, AND TAIL) POINTS 15
BACK MODERATELY LONG, MUSCULARY, AND STRONG. HIPS BROAD AND SLIGHTLY ARCHED, THE HOCKS FIRM SYMMETRICAL AND MODERATELY BENT GIVING PLENTY OF PROPELLING POWER. THE FEET ARE STRONG, FIRM AND TIGHT. TAIL SET HIGH, STRONG AT ROOT, TAPERING MODERATELY LONG SABERLIKE, CARRIED GRACEFULLY UP AND FORWARD, SMALL BRUSH BUT NO FLAG.
SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BREED POINTS 15
A DOG OF MEDUM SIZE, MALES 50 TO 75 LBS. FEMALES 40 TO 65 LBS AND IN PROPORTION TO HEIGHT. HUNTING DOGS NOT PENALIZED FOR UNDERWEIGHT CAUSED BY HUNTING. MALES SHOULD BE FROM 22 TO 27 INCHES AT SHOULDERS. FEMALES FROM 20 TO 25 INCHES. SLIGHTLYHIGHER AT SHOULDERS THAN HIPS. NO ROACH OR SWAY BACKS. COLORS ARE BLACK, WHITE AND TAN COMBINATIONS BUT WHITE WITH TAN OR WHITE WITH BLACK ACCEPTED. ALL OTHER COLORS OR COMBINATIONS WILL BE PENILIZED IN SHOWS. VOICES SHOULD BE A BUGLE BAWL OR CLEAR RINGING CHOP WITH A GOOD CHANGE AT TREE.
GAIT AND MOVEMENT POINTS 15
A LITTLE SWINGING GATE WITH HEAD HELD HIGH WITH TAIL CARRIED WELL UP OVER BACK, A GAIT THAT INDICATES SPEED, STRENGTH, ENDURANCE, AND THE NEEDED ABILITY FOR LONG HOURS OF CHASING AND TREEING GAME. ANY MOVEMENT THAT SHOWS WEAKNESS TO BE CONSIDERED A SERIOUS FAULT, SUCH AS: WEAK FEET, ARCHES OR LEGS.
TEMPERAMENT POINTS 15
ENERGETIC, ACTIVE, INTELLIGENT, CONFIDENT, FEARLESS WITH AN ABUNDANCE OF DESIRE AND ABILITY TO HUNT AND TREEING GAME. AS THESE DOGS HUNT ALONE OR IN PACKS, THEY MUST SHOW AN ABILITY TO GET ALONG WITH OTHER DOG.
FAULTS: OVER HEIGHT LIMIT, TOO AGGRESSIVE, SHYNESS, OVERSHOT OR UNDERSHOT TEETH, A VERY FLAT SKULL. DISH FACED, SMALL DROOPY EYES, SHORT STRAIGHT NECK. DEWLAPS ROACHED OR SWAY BACK.
