Breed Standards for the Basenji

General Appearance and Coat;

Its short coat aids in dealing with the hot climate of Africa

Head and Neck:

Almond shaped eyes, fine, profuse wrinkles on forehead, visible when ears are erect, small erect ears

Front Quarters:

Small oval feet

Hind Quarters:

Short back, tail bends acutely forward and lies well curled over to either side

Special Characteristics:

Red, black, black and tan, or brindle, all with white feet, chest and tail tips; white legs, blaze, and collar optional

Temperament: Clever, inquisitive, stubborn, independent, and reserved
