The origin of beagles is difficult to pinpoint exactly, but many sources say that these dogs were originally bred back in 16th-century England for hunting purposes. In a sport known as “beagling,” these dogs were meant to hunt specifically for hares. Beagles as we know them today have changed significantly since the original breed in 1830s Great Britain, and around the 1870s, several beagles came to the U.S. for breeding. The beagles that came to the U.S. for this purpose are believed to be the original models for the American standard.
Beagles look similar to small foxhounds thanks to their strong, sturdy bodies and their dome-like heads. These dogs have medium-length muzzles that are square-like, and they are known for their large, floppy ears and big eyes. Most beagles have tricolored, short coats in shades of white, brown, and black. Beagles do not get very big – they typically weigh about 20 pounds and stand about 13 inches tall.
Beagles are your classic family dog because they are friendly, affectionate, cheerful, and highly engaging for kids. Most of these dogs get along with people in general, even strangers. They are also friendly with other dogs because they are usually bred in packs.
