OFFICIAL NKC BLUETICK STANDARDS

THIS STANDARD WAS ADOPTED FOR THE PURPOSE OF IMPROVING THE BLUETICK COONHOUND AND TO MAKE THE OVERALL APPEARANCE IS VERY SIMILAR. THIS STANDARD OFFERS BREEDERS, HUNTERS, AND THE SHOW JUDGE A MODEL TOWARD WHICH TO WORK. IT IS HOPED THE DESIRED RESULTS WILL MAKE A BETTER HOUND FOR THE PURPOSE OF HUNTING, STRIKING, TRAILING, AND TREEING THE DESIRED GAME.

GENERAL APPEARANCE AND COAT POINTS 10

PREFERRED COLOR IS DARK BLUETICKED BODY WITH BLACK SPOTS WITH MORE MOTTLED BLUE THEN BLACK. TAN DOTS OVER EYES AND CHEEKS AND REDTICKS ON FEET AND LEGS PERMISSIBLE. OFF COLORS NOT PERMITTED. COAT BRIGHT, HARD MEDIUM LENGTH, SMOOTH AND GLOSSY.

HEAD AND NECK (TEETH, JAWS, MUZZLE, EARS, AND EYES) POINTS 15

HEAD BROAD AND SLIGHTLY DOMED NEVER NARROW, MEASURING 9-10 INCHES IN MALES AND SLIGHTLY LESS IN FEMALES. NECK SHOULD RISE GRACEFULLY CARRIED NOT TOO HIGH OR TOO LOW, MUSCULAR AND MEDIUM LENGTH. TEETH SHOULD BE STRONG SHOWING NO OVERBITE OR UNDERBITE. JAWS AND MUZZLE SHOULD SHOW STRENGTH WITH A SQUARE APPEARANCE STOP TO END OF NOSE. EARS WELL ATTACHED SLIGHTLY BELOW TOP OF SKULL WITHOUT ERECTILE POWER AND TO EXTEND NEAR THE END OF NOSE.

FRONT QUARTERS (CHEST, SHOULDERS, FRONT LEGS AND FEET) POINTS 15

CHEST MEDIUM WIDE BUT DEEP EXTENDING DOWN TO ELBOWS. GIRTH OF CHEST FROM 26 TO 35 INCHES IN MALES WITH FEMALES 3-6 INCHES LESS. RIBS SHOULD APPEAR WELL SPRUNG AND TAPERED BACK. SHOULDERS GRADUALLY SLOPING AND MUSCULAR, NOT TOO BROAD OR PROTRUDING BUT SHOWING FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT AND SPEED. FORLEGS SHOULD BE STRAIGHT AND STRONG WITH FEET ROUNDED AND WELL PADDED. DOG SHOULD STAND WELL UP ON FEET. A TURN IN OR OUT IS A FAULT.

HIND QUARTERS (HIPS, BACK, BACK FEET, LEGS AND TAIL) POINTS 15

HIPS STRONG AND WELL MUSCULAR WITH RUMP SLIGHTLY TAPERED. BACK MODERATELY LONG AND SLIGHTLY TAPERED WITH HIPS SLIGHTLY LOWER THEN SHOULDERS. BACK LENGTH IN PROPORTION OR HEIGHT. BACK LEGS TAPERED MODERATELY BENT HOCKS. FEET ROUND WITH WELL-ARCHED TOES, THICK TOUGH PADS, CATLIKE APPEARANCE, AND NO HIND DEWCLAWS.

SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BREED POINTS 15

SHOULD APPEAR RACY, WELL MUSCLED, GLOSSY, BLUETICK-BLACK SPOTS, HEAD AND TAIL CARRIED HIGH. AN OPEN TRAILER WITH A MEDIUM BAWL OR BUGLE WHEN TRAILING, BUT MAY CHANGE TO A CHOP WHEN RUNNING. WITH A COURSE CHOP WHEN TREED. MALES FROM 22 TO 27 INCHES AND WEIGHING 55-80 POUNDS, WITH FEMALES FROM 21 TO 26 INCHES AND WEIGHING FROM 45 TO 70 POUNDS. NO PENALTY FOR DOGS UNDER WEIGHT FROM HARD HUNTING.

GATE AND MOVEMENT POINTS 15

THE BLUETICK COONHOUND SHOULD SHOW EAGERNESS, RACY, SPEED AND ENDURANCE WITH A SPRINGY STEP. ANY SIGNS OF AWKWARD OF JERKY MOVEMENT IS A SERIOUS FAULT. THIS HOUND IS BRED FOR LONG HOURS IF HUNTING AND OR TRAILING GAME.

TEMPERAMENT POINTS 15

THE BLUETICK COONHOUND SHOULD APPEAR EAGER, HAPPY, LOVEABLE, BOLDNESS, AND TRUST. FIGHTING OR EXTREME SHYNESS IS A SERIOUS FAULT. THE BLUETICK COONHOUND WAS BRED TO HUNT ALONE OR IN A PACK. ANY INDICATION OF WANTING TO FIGHT NOTHING DOG WHILE ON A LEASH, IN BOX, OR ON TREES A SERIOUS FAULT.
