Breed Standards for the Sussex Spaniel

 

 

General Appearance:

A long, low, rectangular body coupled with muscular and rather massive physique

 

 

Head:

Eyes soft and languishing, fairly large, hazel colored; Large, low-set ears

 

 

Tail:

Docked from 5 to 7”

 

 

Color:

Rich golden liver

 

 

Size:

Weight:  35 – 45 lb; Height:  13 – 15”

 

 

Gait:

Its movement is deliberate and rolling because of its short legs and comparatively wide body, a gait that emphasizes power over speed

 

 

Coat:

The abundant body coat is flat or slightly wavy. 

 

 

Temperament:

Tends to be less playful and demonstrative than other spaniels, with a lower energy level
