Breed Standard for the Saluki

 

 

General Appearance:        

The Saluki has a general greyhound-like build and should combine the aspects of grace, symmetry, great speed, and endurance coupled with strength.

 

 

Head:

Stop not pronounced; large oval eyes; long narrow head, moderately wide back-skull

 

 

Tail:

Long, well feathered underneath

 

 

Color:

White, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle, back and tan, tricolor, or any of these on a white background

 

 

Size:        

Weight:  35 – 65 lbs

Height:  Male 23- 28”; Female may be considerably smaller

 

 

Temperament:

The Saluki tends to be aloof and reserved with strangers.  It is extremely devoted to its own family, but it is not particularly demonstrative.  The Saluki is very gentle with children, but it may not be playful enough to satisfy most children.
